This leader is not a manager but a visionary who drives the strategy and execution of compound development, ensuring that every step aligns with the overarching goals of the organization.
The primary purpose of a PL is to lead a cross-functional matrix compound or drug development team (CDT) to create a clear vision and strategy for their asset. This involves assembling a team with representation from all relevant functional partners to develop a comprehensive Development Plan. This plan integrates input from various areas, identifies key development issues, and outlines strategic approaches, timelines, and budgets. The PL ensures that all potential pathways and tradeoffs are considered, providing a thorough and clear asset strategy.

Firstly, they are responsible for creating the target product profile (TPP) in collaboration with commercial, market access, and clinical groups, adjusting this profile as new information and insights are gained. A PL ensures optimal IP, publication, and regulatory strategies to protect the asset’s value.

They challenge functional representatives to ensure all issues and questions are addressed, and that the strategy meets the needs of the compound.
