KEY CHANGES AND 2030 TARGETS
The primary objective is to reduce per capita packaging waste by 15% by 2040 compared to 2018. Key directives include weight reduction and increased reuse starting January 1, 2030, for large household appliances, take-away food, and e-commerce. Furthermore, from 2030, minimum recycled plastic content levels will increase: 30% for contact-sensitive PET, 10% for other sensitive plastics, 30% for single-use bottles, and 35% for other packaging. Certain types of single-use packaging will be banned, such as portion packs in restaurants, fresh fruit packaging, and miniature toiletries in hotels.
BUSINESS IMPACT AND OPPORTUNITIES
Design will follow standardized formats and universal labeling across the EU. Since fragmented regulations among Member States created market barriers, the PPWR plays a key role in harmonizing the sector. To help companies seize these opportunities and navigate the change, ECM is available to analyze the documentation provided, supporting the path toward voluntary certification.
