The Normec Hybeta identifies microorganisms in the laboratory using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry

The advantages and applications of this method have long been recognized, and we are proud to have been performing these analyses as part of our GMP compliance since May, thereby supporting our customers—particularly during the transition to the revised EU Annex 1 that took place in August. This state-of-the-art high-throughput technology is ideally suited, among other things, for identifying sources of contamination.

In order to assess and evaluate potential pathogenicity in a hygiene context, it is usually necessary to know the species of a microorganism.
In the Normec Hybeta laboratory, a MALDI Biotyper®—one of the world’s most advanced MALDI-TOF (Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization – Time-of-Flight) mass spectrometers—is used to identify microorganisms.

MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry

Identification is based on the fact that every microorganism has a unique mass spectrometric fingerprint. To perform the analysis, the sample is applied to a sample carrier, coated with an organic matrix, and analyzed by mass spectrometry. The measurement principle is based on bombarding the analyte-matrix mixture with a laser to ionize it. The charged proteins are guided through a flight tube in a high vacuum, and their individual masses are detected. The measurement takes only a few minutes. By comparing the characteristic mass spectra of these proteins in the sample with specialized databases, the microorganism can then be uniquely and very quickly identified.

In the near future, we will also be able to offer mass spectrometric identification as part of our DIN EN ISO 17025 accreditation. We are also in the process of developing customer-specific databases to expand the range of identifiable species and to support so-called “trending,” particularly in the GMP sector.
